SOUL CARE

We know that people who are passionately serving in ministry often neglect to refuel themselves. You’ll find places for you to care for your soul, whether you spend time in our prayer chapel, visit our Sanctuary, or meet with a spiritual director. You’ll also experience times of worship during our Big Room sessions, where you get to actually participate (instead of planning or leading it)!

sanctuary

The sanctuary is a place to learn new ways to pray that you can take back to your students and communities. In the sanctuary you will also find a place to pray in art, an interactive Stations of the Cross and three daily prayer sessions called the Hours. Sanctuary offerings will be led by youth ministry leaders who are passionate about the soul care of all youth workers and the importance of having a full and robust life with God.

Host:
Archie Honrado

Location:
Room 11 & 12
Time:
4:45-5:45 PM

Vincent van Gogh lived in the depths of his soul. Vincent's biographically inspired art offers a unique allegory of an interior life. He wanted art to guide the religious life into a life-giving spirituality. To contemplate his art is to contemplate his life. His life, an integration of art and spirituality, is a paradox of the human and divine. He lived and died contemplating his true self. Spend some quality and spacious time beholding his extraordinary art, interact with Van Gogh’s writings and perhaps awaken a deeper way of praying that opens you to new possibilities.

When is Self-Care Not Soul Care?

Host:
Archie Honrado

Location:

Time:

In this session we will examine the allure and pitfalls of spiritual materialism and spiritual narcissism, which is endemic in self-care and, increasingly so, in soul care. We will explore how contemplatio (an often overlooked meditation prayer process in lectio divina) invites surrender and letting go, resulting in centering the self towards God and into the true beloved-ness in Christ. This session will also discuss ways contemplatio can be practiced outside of lectio divina.

Location:
Room 11 & 12
Time:

“God made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure.” Eric Liddell (Missionary to China, Movie “Chariots of Fire”). Where do you feel God’s pleasure? Where do you feel God’s presence in your life? That’s your thinplace! The word thinplace is a Celtic term for a place where the veil between heaven and earth is thin, a place where heaven and earth seem to touch. It’s the place where you experience God and feel God’s presence most easily. Everyone has experienced thinplace. It might be at the beach, or in the mountains, or watching the sunset. It might be when you create something, or when you run or cycle. Like Eric Liddell, we’ll begin discovering where we feel God’s pleasure, and build personal and corporate practices to continue the discovery after the NYWC.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing” I Thessalonians 5:16-17. How do we learn to pray without ceasing? Is that even possible in 2018? The Celtic Christians had prayers that they prayed along the way, each day in their regular life. They prayed as they started the fire in the morning. They prayed as they went out the door to work and they prayed in the fields as they worked. In this workshop we will practice ways we can pray without ceasing in our regular everyday lives.

It can harden us or it can connect us more deeply with God, others and ourselves. We will explore spiritual practices that allow us to say “Yes” to God in all that life brings.
